This project is a year long final project for OCADU. This project started with many ideation for the first half of the year with various topics and then eventually it narrows down one subject matter. The ideas of flags and exploring the field of designing flags and learning about the history of flags, vexillology was a connection to broader topic of colours. Flags are fascinating because throughout the project many of friends and classmates started to identify themselves to the flags where they came from. In other words, it is another way to identify who they are. In the graphic design standpoint, the elements used in the flags are very simple and symbolic to the history of the country.
Flags have a purpose of representing the country, the people, and the values of the country. Flags represents only one nation state with fixed borders. In context of today, the many cultures and representation of who we are challenges the traditional representations of flags. In a way, it is express the many border disputes and negotiation between countries around which owns the land. After many exploration of forms when creating the flags and research of the symbols used in the flags with the meaning and understanding of the flags.
At the end, the project is the most interesting project I ever done because the project has its own aesthetic and philosophy when designing the flags. It is successful project and I felt is the beginning of something bigger and I only saw a sneak peak of larger body work.
This is the process book that spans the full year worth of research and graphic design process for creating the flags. The first book (right) was my first year project research for the many topics before I arrive to the final idea. The second book (left) is the culmination of one idea of flags and the whole process of creating the flags for seven different flags.
This is the some of the process work leading up to the finals flags design
This is all the seven flags that I made. I choose this countries because they have border dispute between countries and only one exception is the Six Day War Flag. This flag represent a moment of time in Middle East that shaped whole region and how we approach this region with the continuing conflict in the region. This is the detailed version of the flags made in the digital form before printing in fabric. The size of the flags varies because each flags around the world have different standards and I don't want to stray away from the origin of each flags.
This is final installation of my work hang in the vertical orientation. This reflects the idea of how institutions and some public places present the flags in many countries. The flags are printed in fabric double sided because my installation is in the centre of the room and it makes sense for a flag to have double sided so the audience can see the work in around the room. I added descriptions about each flags which is also explain the second process book.
This is a detailed shot of the fabric and the stitching of all the flags.
This is a sense of scale of the work presented in the room.
This video shows the entirety of the whole installation and the orientation of the flags.
